Chapter 7

I absolutely love Haiti. Charles gets a guide to show me around while he attends to his business, and what I see amazes me. Despite their obvious hardships, the people are friendly and warm, filled with love and really inviting. Yes, poverty is everywhere, but with the heart that these people show, it really just becomes background to a greater story, one that I feel needs to be told, and one that I feel needs to be given a better, happier ending.

I am allowed to manipulate these endings too, because Charles, bless his generous heart and spirit, has given me carte blanch to do what I want to with his money in my efforts to assist and alleviate some of these people’s struggles. It is not possible for me to get to everyone I know, this trip is far too short for that. But just being able to buy food for some needy families, clothes for people without even shirts on their backs, and school shoes and supplies for an entire school goes a long way to fill me with a real sense of achievement.

To think that we manage all this in one day. I really haven’t even had the time to think about what Charles is doing or where. I just know that he is busy, and that I am keeping myself very busy too. By late afternoon Idris, my guide, says that he wants to introduce me to a family. They have apparently had a rough time over the last while, and they could do with my generosity. I don’t even mind the suggestion, thinking that if he sees what I am trying to do here in the short time that I have, all the better. He will probably be able to point me in the direction of some of the needier people.

I meet the Hantus family at their home on the outskirts of a slum very close to the Port Au Prince city center. The daughter’s name is also Tiara, and she has a younger brother named Johnny, who can’t be more than 15. They are a little apprehensive about telling me where their parents are, or why it is that they seem to be left to their own devices for the most part, not a mother or father in sight, not an uncle, aunt or grandparent. I assume that the adults in this household must be out working, or begging, or doing whatever needs to be done to feed the children.

As I talk to these two young people I realize that the only thing they really lack is opportunity, and I find myself struggling to think of ways to create these opportunities for them. I know that I will not come up with anything here, on the spot, but I will think about it tonight, and discuss it with Charles. After leaving them with food and a little bit of money, I say my goodbyes, and head for the hotel, more excited than I’ve been in a long time.
